How Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE) Works
Preparation
Before your exchange, a physician-formulated IV solution is administered to support the mobilization of circulating compounds ahead of the exchange. Your physician determines the formulation based on your individual evaluation.
Separation
Blood is drawn from one arm and passed through a centrifuge, separating your clean cellular components — red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets (~40%) — from your plasma (~60%), which carries the circulating compounds your physician has identified for removal.
Exchange
Your clean components are combined with medical-grade albumin and saline and returned to your other arm immediately. The separated plasma is discarded. No more than 200ml outside your body at any time.
Recovery
Post-exchange, a physician-formulated IV supports cellular recovery and helps your body clear what's been mobilized.
